FESTIVAL PROJECT FINAL EVALUATION

Jacob Ham

DATE

20th March 2017

DEADLINE.

20th March 2017

Brief.

To design a 16 page brochure of my choice.

The brochure must include;

  • Important information about the event

  • Appropriate imagery

  • An article discussing a VIP at the festival.

  • A redesigned map of the site and timetable of           the event.

Project Aims.

  • Throughout this project, I must aim to;

  • Demonstrate professional working methods that explore the creative process and its cycle.

  • Analyse contemporary editorial designs making links to personal creative development through critically evaluating my designs.

  • Create visual outcomes that embrace experimentation and creative exploration

  • Present and evaluate my final outcome to peers, and reflect on how effectively I have delivered the intended message to the audience using visuals.

Printing.
Before presenting my final outcomes to the class and my tutor, I made the decision of sending my brochure to be printed via an online service. The reasoning being that while using the printer within the college, the printer caused the printed result to look dull and gave the

wrong message.

Presentation.
Upon finishing this project, I presented my final outcomes along with the extension task to both my peers and tutor aiming to get feedback or approval of the designs.

While presenting the outcomes, the group got asked to analyse my presentation and the work I had produced based on the following five questions;

  1. How well have they explained the design process for their project?

  2. How effectively did they deliver the intended message? e.g. target audience and ethos of chosen festival.

  3. How effective and original are the visuals used within the project?

  4. Have they completed all tasks and met the brief requirements in full?

  5. What could have been improved or developed further?

Tutor Feedback.
The following feedback is from my tutor about both my presentation and overall project;

  • Great understanding of the target audience along with having a creative outcome.

  • To develop the project further look at breaking the grid apart and looking to contain more information on a single double page spread to show you have a higher understanding of grid systems and editorial designs.

Feedback.
The following is a summary from the feedback I have gotten for each of the questions during the presentation from peers;

Question One.

  • Very good explanation and methods used for designing the logo for the project.

  • The development of key stone device was explained well and broken down using gifs.

Question Two.

  • The message was delivered well, shapes, colours, layout and arrangement all work well with the theme of the project.

  • Great ideas and initial designs along with crucial breakdown of research and past designs of         chosen event.

Question Three.

  • Visuals and colours work well together and fit             the purpose.

  • Very iconic and consistent in grid style and layout throughout.

Question Four.

  • All tasks were completed including extension tasks with prints presented during presentation.

Question Five.

  • Experiment with the grid, making it work with        more information.

Reflection.
During this brief, I was asked to develop a brochure that represented the chosen brand and its target audience effectively. within this reflection, I will discuss how I successfully  did that.

How do you break you the text in an engaging way?
Originally, I chose to break up the text in boxes, but I felt that this did not fully represent the target audience with it being aimed around the creative industry. It was then when I figured to use the diagonal design that was used throughout the front and back cover of the brochure. This allowed me to differentiate text and create a working hierarchy of type that was effective.

How do you use colour effectively?
I decided to base my colour scheme on the most used colour mode by designers which is CMYK, however backing this up was the previous assets of the event that used similar colours. The colours are used in moderation with Magenta and Black being the main colours with Cyan, Yellow and White being the supporting colours. Overall the colours complement one another throughout the

entire project.

How do you keep all spreads balanced?
To keep the spreads consistent and balanced, I developed a grid system that allowed me to correctly place text and images but with it changing from page to page but still looking the same. Having the same sized type often enhances this but sometimes can feel over consistent, so it’s best to stray away from doing so.

How well have you explained the design process for

your project?
I conclude that I have strongly explained the process in which I created every aspect of my work, using mainly diagrams to showcase my thought process from the initial design to the final revision. Overall using this to show progression helped to not only annotate my work but allowed me to see clear progression from start to finish.

How effectively have you delivered the intended message?
I feel that the correct message is given, with the design strongly being aimed at designers and is backed up by having every aspect of the design process and finalised design containing meaning behind. For example, the logo relates to the love of design and the name used in URL of the website.

Have I completed all tasks and met the brief requirements in full?
Yes, I have successfully hit the brief with also developing a wide range of extension tasks that link strongly with the design’s colour and layout. I have since gone back and redeveloped the outcome to further explore grid systems and comparing how the brochure would look if more information was to be featured.

What could have been improved or developed further for future reference?
I could have experimented with grid systems further to presenting my brochure to the class and my tutor but I feel that otherwise, I had developed everything to a high standard in which I am happy with. In future, it would be best to explore every aspect before making final decisions on the grid systems.
