Brief.
Create a poster that will guide students and members of staff to make them understand that they have a duty in preventing radicalisation and help the college communicate with those who attend the college to make them feel safe and make them aware of what they can do if they don’t.

Initial concepts.
The first concept I had in mind for the outcome was to focus around the word and symbol of equality that being an equal sign. To directly relate to equality even more the use of the typical light blue and pink could be used to represent gender equality.

The idea was to create the equal sign in the middle of the page with having a famous quote in each of the parts of the symbol, however the top would be in English then the second one would be translated to the most used language with County Durham or the UK.

The second concept was to further develop the first idea but removing the equal sign and purely relying on type and colour to help showcase the message.

The third concept was to create a simplistic poster that used a bold heading, which would take up most the page but relied on colours to make it come to life.

When using colours, I thought about using those that are present within the branding of the college, being the three shades of blue and the #FFFFFF white.

Throughout development it may be a good idea to try and incorporate the six colours used in the LGBT community to try and help incorporate the biggest aspect of equality in today’s society that being homophobia.
Final design.
The final design I decided to put forward for the brief was a difficult decision but I feel that it was the best choice. The concept was to create a simplistic piece that used a bold typeface to display a quote, in this case by Eleanor Roosevelt.

At first I wanted to experiment on how the colour would cause the main message to appeal. Originally, I had chosen six words to be highlighted but I felt that if fewer was selected they would feel much more unique and important. These six included “Human and Beings”.

Throughout development I tested colours by either using the three colours found in the New College Durham branding or using the six colours using within the LGBT flag. However even though using the six colours it felt over complicated and was tricky to direct and make one word stand out.

Using the college branding was the better option as the colours tie in perfectly. Using the brightest blue to highlight the important words but using the lightest shade to use as the background and the words in italic.

I wanted to expand on highlighting the keywords by adding either a underline or making them italic. I decided to underline them as overall it flowed much easier than being italic.

Adding a diagonal spilt in the background was something that helped me decide on the final design. The background brings the poster to life and allows the words to stand out even more. It also links to the branding of New College Durham with their logo being diagonal in design.

The placement of the New College Durham logo was something I did not decided on until last minute as originally it was right aligned but the problem was that everything was left aligned on the poster so it looked out of place being there or in the middle. Lining it up with the edge of the text was properly for the better.

In the end, I decided to choose the variation that had the main text in white and the highlighted text in blue with an underline as I felt that they stood out even more when you compared they side by side.

Deadline.
Although this was a tight brief compared to the other two short briefs, those being "Retinent" and "Southpaw Dance Company". This brief has not been as detailed as those, in the sense that I only had to develop a poster, showing progression and such. I do feel that the deadline could have been shorter but having a week to fully develop the outcome of the poster was beneficial in the end, as I found a few grammar mistakes prior to printing.

Conclusion.
In the end I am happy with the outcome of this brief, mainly as I can see a clear development from start to finish that shows I tried to do new things and aimed to push the potential of the piece being used and selected. Overall I feel that the design works due to it being simplistic and relating to both the issue and the brand the poster will be used in, that being New College Durham.

Feedback from presentation.
On Monday 30th January, I presented my poster to the class and my tutor to get feedback on ways to explore the poster design even more and I got the following
feedback points;

Positives.
The following are pieces of feedback that are
considered positive;
-
Colour works well, and contrasts one another with key information standing out and underlined.
-
Structure of poster is well presented and looks professional.
-
Having everything left aligned was a great choice with it looking out of place if not.

Negatives.
The following are pieces of feedback that are
considered negative;
-
Change colour to look more appealing to a younger audience.
-
Keep the quote, however incorporate images into the background.
-
Although the design represents the college using the style of branding, it feels too corporate.
